Severe Weather Warning

Heavy rain for eastern parts of New Zealand, and possible severe gales for Buller and northern Westland

Updated to add a Heavy Rain Watch for South Canterbury.

A complex low pressure system affects central and northern New Zealand through to Thursday morning. Heavy Rain Warnings and Watches are in force for eastern parts of the North Island, northwest Tasman, Canterbury and Marlborough. Note, winds may approach severe gale over Buller and northern Westland.

People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case any changes are made or further areas are added.

Heavy Rain Warning – Orange

Impact: Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.

 

Area: Bay of Plenty from Whakatane eastwards

Period: 5hrs from 10am – 3pm Wed, 15 Dec

Forecast: Expect a further 60 to 90 mm of rain to accumulate about the ranges on top of what has already fallen, and lesser amounts near the coast. Peak intensities of 15 to 25 mm/h in about the ranges.

Area: Gisborne from Tokomaru Bay northwards

Period: 6hrs from 10am – 4pm Wed, 15 Dec

Forecast: Expect a further 60 to 90 mm of rain to accumulate about and north of Ruatoria on top of what has already fallen, and lesser amounts further south. Peak intensities of 15 to 25mm/hr in the north.

 

Area: Tasman, about and west of Motueka

Period: 4hrs from 10am – 2pm Wed, 15 Dec

Forecast: Expect a further 30 to 50 mm of rain to accumulate on top of what has already fallen, especially about the ranges. Peak intensities of 10 to 20 mm/h about the ranges.

 

Area: Eastern Marlborough south of Blenheim

Period: 8hrs from 10am – 6pm Wed, 15 Dec

Forecast: Expect a further 60 to 80 mm of rain to accumulate on top of what has already fallen, especially about Kaikoura Coast. Peak rates of 10 to 20 mm/h.

 

Area: Canterbury Plains north of Rangitata River, including the foothills and Christchurch

Period: 20hrs from 10am Wed, 15 Dec – 6am Thu, 16 Dec

Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Expect 90 to 140 mm of rain to accumulate. Peak rates of 15 to 25 mm/h. Note, heavy rain is expected to ease north of Christchurch City after midnight Wednesday.

Heavy Rain Watch

Area: Canterbury Plains from Rangitata River southwards, including the foothills

Period: 17hrs from 2pm Wed, 15 Dec – 7am Thu, 16 Dec

Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria.

Strong Wind Watch

Area: Buller, and Westland north of Hokitika

Period: 4hrs from 11am – 3pm Wed, 15 Dec

Forecast: Southeast winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
