International Biodiversity Day

It’s International Biodiversity Day today! Your small and big actions really count to protecting our taonga biodiversity in our backyards. Why not try some of these:• Create a native ecosystem in your garden. Find weeds, and swap them with plants native to Hawke’s Bay like kōwhai, hebe strictor, lemonwood, and broad leaf vicar
• Plant native plants that are important food for our nectar and fruit feeders, such as kaka, kereru, tui, bellbird
• Do some predator control in your backyard – pick up a free trap at the Environment Centre
• Learn where our environmental “gems” are located – especially in rural areas
• Garden rubbish are where a lot of weeds come from, take them to the refuse station instead of dumping them
• Keep your animals inside at night
