The Government’s investment in digital literacy training for seniors has led to more than 250 people participating so far, helping them stay connected. The Wellbeing Budget in 2019 provided $600,000 to deliver computer training and skills for people who need it. The funding has been used to contribute to Programmes such as Pacific Senior CONNECT and Better Digital Futures that are upskilling people across the country.

Unite against COVID-19
Border controls have been further tightened in light of the new variants of COVID-19. An additional test for COVID-19 will be required for returnees from higher risk countries such as the United Kingdom on their arrival in New Zealand from midnight on 31 December.

The list of 154 honour recipients includes two appointments to our highest honour, The Order of New Zealand, and the appointments of three Dames and four Knights.

Ministry of Education
The new year sees consultation beginning on review of early learning regulations. The Ministry of Education has begun a comprehensive review of the early learning regulatory system. The first tranche of proposals to tighten and clarify parts of the regulations is now available for feedback, by 12 February, 2021.

New challenge for 2021? Strengthen your te reo Māori.
Following its success over the last two years, Te Ahu o te Reo Māori will be expanded as a nationwide initiative for up to 10,000 teachers, leaders and support staff who wish to strengthen their use of te reo Māori. Registrations are now open for the delivery of Te Ahu o te Reo Māori in 2021, which aims to normalise te reo Māori throughout the education system, so it is used every day by everyone in the classroom.

Unite against COVID-19
Extending support for the COVID-19 elimination strategy to June 2022. The Government has set aside extra funding to support the health system’s COVID-19 response and to maintain quarantine facilities up to June 2022, Minister for COVID-19 Response.

NZ Government
The Government will purchase COVID-19 vaccines from pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca and Novavax, meaning every New Zealander will be able to be vaccinated. The new agreements secure access to 7.6 million doses from AstraZeneca – enough for 3.8 million people, and 10.72 million doses from Novavax– enough for 5.36 million people. Both vaccines require two doses to be administered.

Minister for Emergency Management Kiri Allan is reminding all New Zealanders to be “tsunami ready” over the holiday break. The Government is asking people to remember that New Zealand’s entire coastline is at risk of tsunami.

COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins today launched the nationwide ‘Make Summer Unstoppable’ campaign to keep COVID-19 at bay, during day 3 of the Blackcaps test match against the West Indies at Wellington’s Basin Reserve. The campaign TV ads premiered on the big screens at the Basin.
